This is a soft office love story set inside a typical IT cubicle world. A hive of cubicles is all it takes to make an IT company these days. And inside one such cubicle, Mridul was working hard just like everyone else…
The First Meeting
A hive of cubicles is all it takes to make an IT company these days. And inside one such cubicle, Mridul was working hard just like everyone else. It was his first job. He was doing well. He was happy.
After lunch, when he returned to his cubicle, he noticed someone new sitting next to him. He smiled and said,
“Hi.”
She looked up.
“Hi, I am Lavanya. Today is my first day.”
Mridul opened his mouth to welcome her and had a complete slip of tongue.
“Oh welcome, I am Mridul. You are beautiful. I mean, you are beautiful but not in the other way. I am sorry. I should stop talking.”
He sat down immediately, drowning in embarrassment.
Lavanya was confused, shocked for a moment, and then decided to stay quiet.
Mridul spent the next few minutes mentally hiding under the desk and blushing because he already liked her.
When the day ended, everyone started leaving. Mridul stayed a little longer to avoid crossing paths with Lavanya.
An Apology From a Nervous Heart
That night, both kept thinking about each other. Lavanya kept remembering the strange compliment and the awkwardness. Mridul kept searching for a way to face her again and fix the situation.
After a night of overthinking, he decided to apologize properly. He groomed himself like it was a festival day. A neat beard trim, his favorite crisp white shirt, and more deodorant than he had ever used in a week.
He reached the office, ready to apologize. But the moment he saw Lavanya sitting in a beautiful blue Anarkali, ponytail swinging, cat-eye glasses glowing in the office light, he panicked. He cancelled his plan and sat down quietly. Luckily, she did not notice him.
By lunchtime he gathered the remaining courage.
“Hey Lavanya, I really want to apologize for yesterday.”
Lavanya looked up softly.
“It is alright.”
“Thanks. Are you not going for lunch?”
“Yeah, in a moment.”
“Okay, see you then.”
They exchanged a small smile. Something eased between them.
Friendship Begins
The next day they had lunch together. The day after, they walked out together while leaving. Their conversations increased with each passing day. By the weekend, they already connected on Facebook.
By Monday morning, they knew each other’s favorite food, movies, colors, destinations, actors, schools, college stories, friends, relatives, and even embarrassing memories. They had exchanged WhatsApp numbers too.
It was fast. And Lavanya felt they should slow down a little. Something fun and special came to her mind.
She decided to leave five little notes for him. One every week on alternate days. The old school way. Love via letters.
The Notes Begin
Week 1: Monday
Monday morning, when Mridul sat to start his system, he found a small, handmade greeting card decorated with tiny hearts.
Inside it read:
YOU GOT A KILLER SMILE, HANDSOME
He froze. He looked around. Nothing suspicious. He turned to Lavanya.
“Did you put this here?”
Lavanya opened it with dramatic shock.
“Wow, someone has a secret admirer. Why would I put it?”
He had no reason to doubt her.
All week, she teased him at every possible chance.
“Please stop smiling, you are trying to kill me.”
He would shake his head and blush.
That week they went out for dinner and even a movie. Their comfort was growing.
Week 2: Tuesday
Next week, Tuesday morning, another greeting card was waiting on his desk. Bold handwriting, and a raspberry red lipstick kiss mark just under the message.
HOW ABOUT A LONG DRIVE, LIFE IS TOO SHORT

This one was intense. Mridul was shocked.
At lunch he whispered to Lavanya,
“Look at this. Who is doing this?”
Lavanya examined it like a detective.
“Someone is completely in love with you. This is serious.”
All week Mridul played detective. He arrived early. He checked desks. He watched for clues. Lavanya enjoyed every second of his investigation.
Week 3: Wednesday
Lavanya noticed that he arrived early almost every morning. So she switched the plan.
This time, she did not place the note on his desk.
She placed it on his bike in the parking lot, with a red rose petal stuck below it.
In the evening, when he reached his bike, he found the card.
ICE CREAM TASTES BETTER IN MY COMPANY
A single rose petal slipped out.
He clicked pictures and sent them to Lavanya.
“My god, how lucky are you” she replied.
“But who is she” he asked.
“Maybe you will know when it is time.”
That night, he sat thinking.
First note on Monday.
Second note next week Tuesday.
Third note third week Wednesday.
There was a pattern.
He told Lavanya his theory:
“She is increasing the gap by one day each week. Next note will come on Thursday.”
Lavanya laughed.
“Genius. Let us see.”
He slept like a man preparing for a mission.
Week 4: Thursday Twist
Thursday morning, he arrived before everyone. He searched his desk. Nothing.
He rushed to the parking. Nothing.
He felt victorious.
He had broken the pattern.
To break the admirer’s approach, he even took a taxi that day. If she wanted to give the note, she would have to do something adventurous.
The day passed. Nothing happened.
He celebrated quietly in his mind.
But when he returned home, his mother handed him an envelope.
“Someone slipped this under the door after you left.”
His heart stopped for a moment.
He opened it.
I HEARD PARIS IS VERY ROMANTIC, LET US GO TOGETHER
He sat laughing at himself.
She had beaten his logic again.
That night he told Lavanya he would ignore all future notes. But his heart continued replaying the handwriting, the petal, the lipstick kiss, and the idea that someone cared enough to do all this.
Feelings Grow Beyond Letters
Days passed. The notes stopped coming.
But something else began.
Between him and Lavanya, everything felt softer. Deeper. More meaningful.
He started planning a proposal.
Lavanya, knowing the right moment had come, prepared her final reveal.
The Final Note
Week 5: Friday Morning
Friday morning, when he went to take his bike, a final note waited for him.
No lipstick.
No petal.
Just confidence.
IF YOU WANT TO MEET ME, COME TO KEVIN’S BRUNCH WITHIN HALF AN HOUR. I WILL BE WEARING A RED DRESS
His breath caught.
He did not waste a second.
He rushed to Kevin’s Brunch.
Inside, a woman in a red dress sat alone at the last table. Her back faced the door. His heartbeat doubled as he walked toward her.
When he reached the table, he saw her face.
“Lavanya, what are you doing here”
She did not look surprised.
She looked beautiful.
“I am waiting for someone. Someone with a killer smile”
And just like that, every letter, every petal, every teasing lunch, and every silent moment made sense.
Mridul sat down and smiled the smile that started it all.

A Reflection on Love
Love does not always appear with drama or big gestures. It sometimes comes softly. Through handwritten notes, through teasing laughter over lunch, through silent stares across cubicles, and through secret confessions written in ink.
Sometimes the most beautiful love stories start with a nervous compliment and a handmade card.
Love via letters is not old fashioned. It is timeless.
